Immigration and Visa Services in the Philippines
In the Philippines, 20 types of visas are offered to foreign nationals who wish to visit or stay in the country. These are categorized into three groups.
Non-Immigrant Visa Options
Non-Immigrant visas are usually used for temporary visits such as employment, business, leisure, study, or transit. Currently, there are 8 non-immigrant visas offered to foreign nationals, and the most common is the 9(g) or work visa. This visa is granted to foreign individuals that seek long-term employment in the Philippines.
Aside from the 9g, another common visa sought by foreign individuals is the 9(A) or Temporary Visitor’s Visa. This visa is granted to foreigners seeking a short-term stay for tourism, business, or medical purposes. Other visas included in this category include student, transit, diplomatic, investor, and seaman’s visas.
General Requirements for Non-Immigrant Visas
Documentary prerequisites must be prepared before a foreign national can apply for their visa. Below are the requirements for a 9g visa application:
Checklist with complete documentary required; and
Completed aforementioned 9(g) Work Visa Application Form; and
Additional information on the applicant’s children (if applicable); and
Notarized certification of the number of foreigners and Filipino employees; and
Any additional documents deemed necessary to support the applicant’s employment
On the other hand, when it comes to applying for a 9(a) visa, a foreign national must prepare the following documents prior to their application:
An original letter of invitation from a reference person or company in the Philippines. The letter must be signed by the authorized company signatory and notarized in the Philippines, e.g., proof of status as a businessman.
An official letter from the company where the foreign national is employed mentioning the reason/s for the employee’s travel to the Philippines and the expected duration of stay.
Special Visas. On the other hand, this type of visa is given to qualified foreigners belonging to the demographic groups. They are granted special entry privileges through legislation or presidential proclamations.
Immigrant Visa Options
Immigrant visas are for foreign individuals who seek permanent residence in the Philippines. There are two types of immigrant visas offered to foreign nationals, those are quota immigrant visas and non-quota immigrant visas.
Quota immigrant visas are issued to foreign nationals who are originally from countries that have diplomatic ties with the Philippines and grant Filipino citizens the same immigration privileges under the principle of reciprocity. No more than 50 quota visas are granted by the Bureau of Immigration in the country per year.
On the other hand, non-quota visas are granted to foreigners who are married to Filipino citizens and former Filipino citizens seeking to reacquire their citizenship in the Philippines. The most common type of non-quota visa is the 13(A) Marriage Visa. This is granted to foreigners legally married to Filipino citizens, their marriage must be recognized as valid under existing Philippine laws.
Another type of non-quota visa is the 13(g) Visa, which is issued to natural-born citizens of the Philippines who have been naturalized in a foreign country.
Special Visa Options
The last category is special visas. In the Philippines, there are currently over six visas issued, these are grouped into two categories, these are special non-immigrant visas and special immigrant visas.
Special non-immigrant visas are usually granted to foreign nationals who are employed by companies registered in the Philippines. The most common types of this visa are the following:
47a2 Visa. These visas are issued to those employed by companies registered with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), the Board of Investments (BOI), or oil drilling companies.
ROHQ/RHQ Visa. This type of visa is granted to foreign executives assigned to perform duties in the regional operating branch in the Philippines. This visa has a maximum validity of three years.
SEVOBU Visa. Lastly, this visa is issued to foreign employees assigned by any foreign bank to work in its offshore banking unit in the Philippines.
On the contrary, special immigrant visas are issued to foreign individuals seeking to stay in the Philippines indefinitely or permanent residency for work, investment, or retirement purposes. Presently, three types of special immigrant visas are offered to foreigners, such as:
Special Investor’s Resident Visa (SIRV). This visa is granted to foreigners investing a minimum of US$75,000 in either new or existing companies in the Philippines. (The company must engage in specific industries or are publicly- listed).
Special Visa for Employment Generation (SVEG). The SVEG is issued to foreign individuals who shall employ at least 10 Filipinos in a lawful and sustainable enterprise, trade, or industry.
Special Resident Retiree’s Visa (SRRV). Meanwhile, SRRV is issued to foreign individuals over the age of 35 and able to remit an initial deposit of as low as US$1,500.
